Best Time to Visit Mongolia - Photo 1

Mongolia is a country of four distinct seasons and famously extreme weather. Winters are long and bitterly cold, while summers are short, pleasant, and full of life. This dramatic contrast is part of what makes Mongolia such a unique destination. In summer, average temperatures are around 20°C, while in winter they can drop to around -20°C or even lower depending on the region. Summer – The Best Time to Visit Without doubt, the best time to visit Mongolia is summer, especially from the second half of June to the first week of September. The weather is warm, the countryside is green, and travel conditions are at their best. It is also the perfect season to enjoy Mongolia’s biggest festivals, including the Tenger World Shaman Festival and Danshig Religious Festival in June, Playtime Music Festival in early July, and of course the world-famous Naadam Festival on July 11–12.Autumn – Ideal for Fewer Crowds The second-best time to travel is autumn, especially September. The weather remains pleasant, the landscapes turn beautifully golden, and there are fewer tourists compared with the summer peak season. September is also the best time to experience the iconic Eagle Festival in western Mongolia, home of the Kazakh community. Winter – Cold but Magical In third place comes winter. Although it is extremely cold, winter can be magical in the right places. Khuvsgul Lake in northern Mongolia becomes a stunning frozen world, and in February visitors can enjoy the famous Ice Festival. Near Ulaanbaatar, skiing is also possible for those looking for a winter activity.Spring – Least Recommended, but Still Interesting Our least favorite season to recommend is spring, mainly because the weather is very unpredictable. It may snow one moment, turn sunny the next, and become windy shortly after. Still, spring has its own charm and special events, such as Lunar New Year in February, especially if you have a local family or friends to celebrate with, the Camel Festival in the Gobi Desert in March, and the Ulaanbaatar Marathon in May. Final Thought If you are visiting Mongolia for the first time, summer is the clear winner. For travelers who prefer fewer crowds, autumn is an excellent choice. Winter offers beautiful and unique experiences, while spring is best for those who do not mind unpredictable weather and want to see a different side of Mongolia.
