3 Must See Mongolian Movies With English Subtitles

1.     Ten Soldiers of Chinggis Khaan - 2012

This film follows an Aravt, a group of 10 elite warriors, as they embark on a dangerous mission while serving Chinggis Khan. Their mission is to find the Master Physician who is believed to be the only one who can save the tribes from the deadly plague. The Aravt were not the only ones searching for the healer, which is where the danger begins. An interesting aspect of this film is that Chinggis Khan is never actually pictured on screen, only spoke about with the utmost respect. This feeds into the great aura and power than the king had among his people. The orders of Chinggis Khan were treated as law, and loyalty among his followers was palpable through their actions. Focusing on individual soldiers rather than the great historical figures made this film unique. These soldiers had their own respective stories, adding to the overall narrative. Another unique aspect of this film was the conflict between Mongolians. Most films about Mongolians depict them as ruthless conquerors, vanquishing their opponents. The power struggle within tribes under Chinggis Khan added an interesting twist compared other films that follow the Mongolians.

I really enjoyed this film. It has a captivating, strong storyline with beautiful cinematography. It includes countless shots of beautiful landscapes, while warriors rode through on horseback. These scenes allow you to immerse yourself in the environment that they lived in and picture what it must have been like to ride through the vast Mongolian Steppe.

Overall, I would recommend this film. It was an excellent depiction of Mongolians, by Mongolian film makers.

Sarı Köpeğin Yuvası - The Cave of the Yellow Dog

This film follows the life of a nomadic family living in the Mongolian steppe. It focuses on a young girl and the special bond she forms with a stray dog. The film beautifully weaves themes of tradition, family, and the connection between humans and nature, offering a gentle exploration of life in a nomadic community. Its picturesque landscapes and tender storytelling make it a moving cinematic experience. We get a sense of what the nomadic lifestyle entails through the family’s daily tasks and problems they face.

It is on the slower side, lacking action and fight scenes that one may expect out of a traditional Mongolian film, making it a relaxing and fun watch. If you appreciate films that are reflective, touching, and beautifully crafted, this one is a must-watch.

3.     State of Dogs – 1998

State of Dogs 1998

State of Dogs is a poetic and deeply reflective film that seamlessly intertwines elements of documentary and fiction to explore profound themes of life, death, and rebirth. Set against the strikingly beautiful landscapes of Mongolia, the story follows Baasar, a stray dog who has been killed, as his spirit reflects on his life and awaits reincarnation. Rooted in Mongolian beliefs and folklore, the film delves into the unique spiritual connection between humans and animals, offering a narrative that is both meditative and symbolic.

The filmmakers use the dog's perspective to provide a contemplative lens through which viewers can consider their own relationships with nature, mortality, and coexistence. The film avoids a traditional plot structure, instead relying on dreamlike visuals, a calming pace, and narration to create an atmosphere of introspection. This unconventional storytelling approach encourages the audience to engage with the film on an emotional and philosophical level.

With its stunning cinematography capturing the vast steppes, rugged mountains, and open skies of Mongolia, viewers are immersed in a world that feels timeless and deeply connected to nature. The profound storytelling ensures it leaves a lasting impression
