Tour Overview

The Thousand Camel Festival takes place in Bulgan soum of Umnugobi province. It originated in 1997 to preserve the cultural heritages that evolved around the Bactrian camels and whose numbers were dwindling at the time. The celebration of the Bactrian camels draws hundreds of travelers from all around every year. The main events include camel racing, camel polo and arts shows. Taking place in a beautiful Gobi scenery with snow covered sand dunes and cliffs forming a magnificent scenery, the event is beyond picturesque with the majestic camels clad in their winter furs.

Tour Itinerary

    Overnight Tour
    • Day 1 - Ulaanbaatar

      Upon arrival, meet with the guide and the driver; and transfer to hotel. Optional full and half-day city tours are available.

    • Day 2 - South Gobi

      After meeting the guide and the driver in the morning, drive to Umnugobi province. It is a semi-arid desert zone in the South-Gobi and is the southernmost province of Mongolia. Check in to a Guesthouse upon arrival. Visit a nomadic camel breeding family and experience the hospitality of Mongolian nomads. Then drive to the world-famous Flaming Cliffs rich with the saxaul trees of the Gobi. Explore the site of the first paleontological discoveries in Mongolia by following the footsteps of Roy Chapman Andrews (January 26, 1884 – March 11, 1960), an American explorer, adventurer, and naturalist. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight at the local Guesthouse (L/D).

    • Day 3 - Camel festival

      After breakfast, we drive to Bulgan soum and watch the camel festival opening ceremony. The opening ceremony starts with the Camel Parade which includes every camel at the festival. Travelers are able to participate in the camel Parade. During the opening ceremony, the competition to determiner “The Most Beautiful Couple on Camels” begins. Also, Mongolian traditional game “Shagain Kharvaa” bone ankle flicking game starts. After observing the activities, drive back to the local Guesthouse for overnight (B/L/D).

    • Day 4 - Camel Racing

      The competition begins with the race of adult camels. It is followed by the two-year-old camels’ race. It is possible to place a bet and back a camel of your liking. The camels are judged on their speed during 12km and 15km races. The first three camels to cross the finishing line are awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals. Enjoy lunch in Bulgan soum. In the afternoon, the most anticipated competition begins. This competition is the “Camel Relay”. It consists of catching, taming, training, and finally loading a camel with an actual Ger. There are several teams of 5 members. Each member of the team performs a different task. The closing ceremony takes place later in the afternoon where the winners are presented with trophies. Dinner and overnight stay at the local Guesthouse (B/L/D).

    • Day 5 - Ulaanbaatar

      After an early breakfast, drive to Ulaanbaatar with lunch on the way. Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, transfer to hotel (B).

    • Day 6 - Departure

      Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to International airport.
